  1. Hi Halyley

I have one that i've just been struggling with - text on a print and cut file. I don't want my text to be cut - and know how to 'unselect' it from being cut, but I don't want the text to be hollow either - just normal... i've read all the manual but this specific thing isn't covered, only how to put text on a path (which was easy - seeing as I didn't need it and did it by accident)!

    Will send an e-mail in...

    thanks for the heads up.

    1. I'm not 100% sure I'm with you. Do you mean something along the lines of a text in a die cut panel may be like a Place Name Card?

    2. Sorry - that made no sense at all did it lol...

Basically, I wanted to create a printed greeting in an oval. I typed my greeting in Studio (I have DE), but instead of the type being 'normal' it was typing as if I wanted it cutting - but I didn't - I just wanted to print it. I did it a different way in the end: a)wrote my greeting in Craft Artist b)copied and pasted into paint c) saved as a jped (or png) then opened it back up in Studio. Ta da... I just wondered if there was a way I could have typed it straight into Studio, but it appears that text there is only for cutting!!

Hope that makes better sense lol.

    3. Hi Hayley

When i watched one of the Serif shows during your demonstration you mentioned that it was compatible with all non cartridge cutting machines, Can you tell me how to send an image from serif to my cameo and how it all works as i have tried but it doesnt seem to pick it up only my normal printer . thanks

    4. Paula, yep that's the main way of doing it.

With out going too techy, letters are created in a loop.... imagine taking an elastic band and shaping the loop to form a letter :) Studio follows the line of the elastic band, sadly it's just the way they're made. There are some fonts that are much 'tighter' probably too tight to cut but pop a pen in and they appear to be a single line font..... if that makes sense. Engravers have a similar problem so there are some fonts especially designed for them to use, they work well with pens in the Silhouette machines too. Googling Engravers Fonts/Typeface should find you some free fonts :)

    5. Gaynor, you'll need to design your sheet in Serif and export it as a high resolution jpeg (300dpi). Then you'll need to add it to your library, open it in your project and trace the elements. Once you've got to the jpeg stage following the Die Cut Decoupage Tutorial on here will get you there :)

  2. I have 1 comment. Will you actually demo anything that works this time. The Cameo is a wonderful tool but in your hands it looks complete rubbish. Sory if i offend but its true

    1. :0) Certainly to the point Sue and no offence caused lol

Regular shows are very different to The Paper Clinic. The shear quantity of products and covering the basics don't leave a lot of time for much else in a regular show and I do try to cram as much information as is possible in.

The Paper Clinic should hopefully allow me to do more tutorial kind of demonstrations based on questions raised by viewers.

  3. Thanks for replying Hayley. Perhaps you should try to cram less infomation in and stick to a simple design that can be drawn or taken from the lib then show how to manipulate it. Leave the vynal alone, stick to Cameo paper and just slow down.
Most crafters, at first, just want to cut shapes. Nesties would be great. Just a tip. Set the Cameo settings on the machine to DEEP CUT you may have more luck. i did read somewhere that cuttings machines do not like being moved around much. Good luck with the show...and Hayley i;ll be watching...lol Sue

  4. I'll certainly take on board what you're saying and will let the production team know.

Ironically the take a 'shape and manipulate it', plus the text path demos and nested shapes are the way I used to demo and then was asked to change it. People were saying that they knew the basics and why wasn't I showing x,y, and z to show the full potential of the machine :) I had already decided to go back to how I used to demonstrate and ask viewers to consider that they'll be able to explore the fabulous potential when they get it home. 2 hours and concentrating on good content rather than the big sell should give me plenty of time to cover everything I want to. I might have to stick to my guns and be a bit more assertive :)

It's often difficult in the studio to do test runs.... I always set it up at home first, and usually, if the show being broadcast isn't next to me I can pre-cut in the studio but this isn't always the case. I've had situations when the pre-cut's worked perfected and then the live cut does't ! But we've all had that at some point at home too :) I think they call it Sod's Law.

I can't promise I won't be cutting vinyl. In past shows it's always sold well, but that will depend on the production team and Graphtec. The upsells do sell well we we do have to show, and potentially demonstrate them all, even in a 1 hour show.

Finally, I shan't deny that I have become more nervous about the Cameo shows. I often feel that some people are waiting for something to go wrong just to say 'told you so' but I love using the machine with a passion so I persevere but it does knock your confidence, and it's hard to put them to the back of your head.

Thank you again for your thoughts and comments Sue.

  5. Hayley, i think, and would hope, that there are more frustrated Cameo users that would LOVE the shows to go right as opposed to you going wrong. I can really understand your nervous about the show...i know i would be, but, if you are a genuine Cameo user then have faith. Stick to you guns and demo how you want and incoporate what they want you to show with that. Afterall, as a freelance demonstrator Hayley the previous shows do not show you in a great light. Take care. Sue

  6. Wow!! That told you then Hayley ;-) I think sometime we forget that c/c is after all a SHOPPING channel first and that they and the supplier i.e Graphtec are primarily interested in selling the product. Whilst I think they would probably sell more if they allowed the demonstrator, i.e you, time to show us its potential they are the ones calling the tune. I for one believe you do a good job - it must be a difficult balance to strike especially on live tv when you only get one shot at it and your nerves are running high. I too have a passion for my machine but stand up in front of a camera and face thousands of viewers- no way. Keep your head up Hayley and remember most of us understand your plight.

Paper clinic is a great idea for the Cameo and I hope the production team let you call the shots then you can show us all your true passion. I for one believe in you and thank you for all you have done so far on tv and through your blog.

Just a final comment - it was through your enthusiasm on a show in Feb that my husband bought me my machine for our 38th wedding anniversay so thank you Hayley. I will be recording all 2 hours of the cameo paper clinic.

  7. I would like to add, that it is because of Hayley that I bought the Cameo, It's because of Hayley's help and encouragement that I have the confidence to try new ideas and its because of Hayleys totally selfless attitude to help everyone that I trust her to answer all queries with ease, and if she doesn't know she will make it her business to find out.

  8. I also bought my Cameo when I saw Hayley demonstrate it the first time it was on before Christmas,I too will be recording the show & have also downloaded Hayley's tutorials

  9. I have the silhouette which my husband bought for me last year and am ashamed to say that I have only made two cards with it. I initially wanted it because I understood you could import designs and cut them out for decoupage. I suffer from severe arthritis in my hands and cutting out manually can be painful. I havent as yet found out how to cut decoupage with my machine so will be watching the show in may. Hayley this is the first time I have visited your blog spot and was so pleased to see so much about the silhouette. I shall defiately be back

  10. I have just downloaded the article "Die cut decoupage tutorial" so I shall definately be trying this out over the weekend. You are a god send Hayley your blog is certainly going to end a few of my headaches

  11. I love your shows, Hayley, and have most of them recorded so I can go back to them for inspiration. Can you help please - is it OK to use glitter card stock? I am referring to C & C's 12 x 12 glitter card stock which is lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm not familiar with that card. If it's a non-drop glitter card then you should be ok but all glitter card is abrasive on your blade so could mean you have to change it more frequently, or may be save an older blade for you glitter card.

  13. Hi Hayley,
I have read the postings with interest. Firstly its a shopping channel, its not there to do demonstrations in depth. Its there to push products through the warehouse door. If fellow crafter's want in depth demo's then they should go to yTube where there are videos showing how to do this and that.
It would be interesting to see how critics would fair when faced with a presenter who says 'We need to go to this product now'. 'Oh have you seen our New Offers on this and that product'.Then doing what they are paid to do and thats SELL.
Your doing a great job. Have faith in your creative talent you will get it right on the night!

  14. Wise words Alan. Ironically, during my prep I cut out a sample with the phrase..... 'Believe in Yourself' and took that on board and I think it paid off :))

    Thank you for your support

  15. Hi Hayley. The show went well. It must have been nerve racking for you but it didnt show. It was well structured and not all over the place and the demos worked.Nigel was in overdrive, he can be a real plank sometimes..lol but well done. My faith is restored.

    And to the sheep....baaaaaaa :)

    1. Thank you Sue,

It was quite nerve racking but I relaxed once I got my first demo done.

I have to be honest and say that when I was at the pc I was concentrating that hard I missed most of what Nigel said :) oops

  16. Hiya Hayley,
I watch all your shows when your presenting the Cameo, and think that you do a terrific job! So much so, that you convinced me that I needed one of these machines in my life!! I am thrilled to bits with the machine, but feel that there is one thing that lets it down, and that's the little itty bits of paper that gets stuck up in the blade housing, which then stops my machine mid cut. Am I doing something wrong? Do others have this problem also? Are Graphtec planning on doing anything about this? I've only had my machine for about 2 months and I'm on my 3rd blade already, and I don't use my machine every day! I believe I've read somewhere that one of the other Graphtec Cutting Machines used to have a blade housing that was easy to clean, I just wish the Cameo had this facility! Everything else about the Cameo is great, and I do hope that you can throw some light on this problem for me!! Keep up the good work, your shows are great too!
Many thanks for all the info and tutorials

    1. Thank you for your kind words Amanda :)

3 blades in 2 months does seem a lot I have to say??? Do you find that your blade is cutting into your mat a lot?
I know we're going to cover blade settings and housekeeping in the Paperclinic show on the 14th so you may pick up some tips there.I usually find that a blade lasts a month for me and I use it loads?

I have heard a rumour that Silhouette may be designing a blade housing that can be opened to clean away the debris which I know will be welcomed. If I hear any more I'll post something on here. On the recommendation of a fellow Cameo User I've bought a can of compressed air from Sainsbury, in the computer accessory section, which can be used to blow out paper bits. I should imagine most stationery shops would sell it too.

  17. Hiya Hayley,
Many thanks for your reply! I'll be investing in a can of compressed air and live in hope that Silhouette will design an 'opening' blade housing!! I've made a note of the date of the Paperclinic show, so hopefully I'll pick up some hints and tips there too!
Thank you once again for your time and trouble,
    Amanda x

  18. Hi Hayley,
I watched the show on C&C about the cameo and found it very informative. However I have the Silhouette SD so will the instructions for cutting decoupage be the same? I was little annoyed as when I bought my machine it was only a few weeks later that the Cameo was on C&C. which is where I purchased mine in the first place (at the time I was upgrading from the Craft Robo) What is the difference between the Cameo and the Silhouette SD? I hope you can make sense of this.
    Regards Wendy

  19. The Die cut decoupage proceedure is exactly the same Wendy x

The SD is a fabulous machine, I still use mine. The Cameo has a more powerful motor so you can cut thicker card, has a quieter motor and has a wider 'throat' area so you can cut up to 12" wide.

I guess it depends on what you're looking to cut out as to whether it's worth upgrading but I do know that 2nd hand SD's have been getting good price x
